EMS Fundamentals

Be familiar with the basic terminology, concepts and principles related to the Environmental Management System (EMS).  

Domain 2

EMS Requirements

Comprehend the core requirements for establishing, implementing, maintaining, and consistently improving an Environmental Management System (EMS).

Domain 3

Initiation and Planning

Initiate and plan an Environmental Management System (EMS) by determining the resources and processes required for successful implementation and ensure that quality objectives are aligned with the organization’s strategic direction. 

Domain 4

EMS Implementation

Implement and operate an Environmental Management System (EMS) based on a risk assessment approach to produce deliverables in alignment with environmental requirements and objectives, and ensure the active involvement of stakeholders and sustained communication throughout the implementation cycle.

Domain 5

EMS Evaluation

Evaluate the Environmental Management System (EMS) performance and effectiveness through continuous monitoring, measurement, and analysis against established quality objectives and applicable requirements.

Domain 6

EMS Improvement

Maintain and improve the suitability, adequacy and effectiveness of an Environmental Management System (EMS) on a continuous basis by taking corrective and/or preventive actions and monitoring their effectiveness.

Recertification

The ISO 14001 Lead Implementer certification program has a three-year recertification cycle. To retain certification beyond this period, candidates are required to fulfill specific requirements, including the payment of either an annual maintenance fee (AMF) or a triannual maintenance fee (TMF).

Moreover, a total of 90 Continuing Professional Education (CPE) credits are required to be accrued over the three year recertification cycle, with 30 CPE credits recommended for each year. The CPE credits earned are required to be related to the subject matter area of the certificate you hold. For ISO 14001 Lead Implementer, the CPE credits are required to be activities related to the following subject matter areas:

  2. Environment
  3. Quality

These obligations ensure that certified professionals remain up-to-date and proficient in relevant areas, thereby maintaining the program's high standards of expertise and knowledge retention.
